The word ‘quarantine’ describes a place of isolation or enforced detention and containment. It conjures up a place we would not like to visit or stay in.
Sailing on our boat, The Argus, down the D’Entrecasteaux Channel to Quarantine Bay on Bruny Island holds special memories for me. When entering Quarantine Bay by water one is able to scrutinize the shoreline closely. From this viewpoint one can see things that are not visible from land.
Upon going ashore I would walk over grey rocks gathering wild oysters and mussels, placing them carefully into an old orange onion bag. A fire is lit amongst the rocks and the catch is cooked and eaten.
My paintings for this exhibition are based upon my memories of time spent at Quarantine Bay; a place that I will one day return to.
